“Our last appointment together literally shifted something deep inside of me to where I am showing up differently, an amazingly positive shift! My youngest, over the weekend said “Mommy, Dr. Riba is really helping us! I am feeling better!” I said “Yes, she is baby! Yes she is!” I wasn’t sure whether to jump for joy or cry out of happiness! I do know one thing… You and your beautiful staff ROCK!!!”

“Just had to send you a note to recognize the importance and value that you and your practice are providing to our society. It is frightening to think of where we could potentially be headed if this is not resolved and the impact you can have on our future. So just a quick note to say thank you for all your passion, vision, & dedication to helping the many children who are not in control of their surroundings or food supply. You will leave your mark on more people than you know!!!”

One case that stands out is a family with five children who first came to DrRHC clinical services in Santa Ana for various feeding issues, including one obese child, one underweight, and general poor nutrition and inactivity. After multiple one-on-one care visits with Dr. Riba, our Registered Dietitian, and fitness trainers, the mother learned more about nutrition and the importance of feeding her children proper foods. While she would normally make them fatty foods and sugary drinks, because that’s all she thought they would eat, she learned how to make healthy, good foods that her whole family could enjoy. The children began attending Fit Club in January after finding out they had nowhere to play near where they live. One daughter (5 years old) was initially very shy and apprehensive to do any exercising without her mom nearby. Within a few sessions, however, all children broke out of their shells and went on to become the most active and all-star members with near perfect attendance. The family has especially benefitted from the nutritional recipes and cooking demos provided at Fit Club, empowering the children to make changes at home, too. The mother uses our recipes at home and now packs healthy snacks for her children regularly. In May, DrRHC held our annual dodgeball tournament and had a Fit Club team sponsored to participate in the competition, including this family’s son. He excelled at the dodgeball tournament and enjoys Fit Club so much that he hopes to intern someday. The entire family has made huge strides in becoming healthier and more active.
One case that stands out from Mission Viejo is a child who came in for services with both parents, as a referral from CalOptima. The family had a history of health complications and the father has type II diabetes. The child had his kidney removed in 2009 due to recurring infections and the child has since developed high blood pressure and obesity. The mother has struggled with making healthy choices for the kids and the father is very aware of healthy choice but has some battles with the mother over having junk food in the house. Since they began treatment in January, they have stopped buying lunch at school and the mother is now packing her child a healthy lunch five times a week. Other positive changes include offering whole grain cereal, more water often, and other healthy snacks. The whole family has gotten on board to increase their exercise and become more active together. At the child’s last visit with his primary doctor, they were informed that the child no longer needs high blood pressure medication since he is doing much better and losing weight. Our services taught both parents the importance of the psychology of feeding and the division of responsibility, which decreased stress around meals and helped the entire family become healthier.
