Join Dr. Riba on April 21st for Cooking up Change—She’ll be one of the guest judges! “I am honored to be part of such an important and supportive event sponsored by Kid Healthy that involves nutritious school lunch meals and young culinary talent!” – Dr. Riba
About the event: Culinary students from the Greater Orange County area are competing in Cooking up Change, a dynamic culinary competition that puts student voices front and center in the national dialogue about school food. Working within the constraints schools face every day, teams of high school culinary students are taking on the challenge to create a delicious, nutritious school lunch that their peers will enjoy.
Cooking up Change provides high school students from title I, low-resource schools, the opportunity to transform the school lunch menu, develop valuable culinary arts skills, increase their self-esteem, & become leaders in school food reform. In addition, it encourages them to seek a secondary education and utilize their knowledge in a career as a chef or in the field of nutrition sciences. Each student team is challenged to create a new lunch menu following a strict set of criteria including: utilizing only ingredients commonly found in a school cafeteria, a budget of $1.75 per serving, all while making it creative, great tasting and nutritious. Each team presents their meal to an esteemed panel of judges. The winning team then travels to Washington, DC to compete on a national level.
Kid Healthy’s programs intentionally reach youth in low-income communities of Orange County and in schools with a disproportionately high percentage of students eligible for the federal free and reduced meal program, a reliable indicator of poverty.
